How to Prevent Ball Mill Blockages?

Nov 10, 2025

I. Material Control
‌1. Particle Size and Moisture Management‌
Strictly control feed particle size (recommended ≤12mm for wet milling and ≤25mm for dry milling) to avoid accumulation of oversized or fine materials.
Control material moisture content (≤15% for wet milling). High-moisture materials should be pre-dried or a grinding aid (such as triethanolamine) should be added to reduce viscosity.
‌2. Impurity Filtration‌
Install a permanent magnetic separator or vibrating screen to remove impurities such as metal debris and dirt to prevent blockage of the baffle plate grates.
II. Equipment Optimization
‌1. Baffle Plate and Grate Improvement‌
Increase the grate plate ventilation area (20%-32% of the center circle) and optimize the ball retaining ring height to ensure ventilation even in the event of blockage.
Adopt a half-length lifting plate design, installed at an angle, to promote material flow and prevent saturation in one bin. 2. Ventilation and Cooling System

Regularly clean the dust collector and air ducts to ensure stable ventilation within the mill and prevent moisture accumulation.

Inspect the cooling water lines to avoid blockages that could lead to poor heat dissipation.

III. Operation and Maintenance

1. Lubrication and Transmission Inspection

Regularly replace the lubricant (such as No. 90 anti-wear gear oil) and clean the lubrication lines to prevent bearing overheating and cascading failures.

Monitor the gear mesh clearance and replace if wear exceeds 20%.

2. Regular Cleaning and Calibration

Clean the mill from accumulated material every 1-3 months and inspect the liner for wear (replace if the thickness is ≤ 2/3).

Calibrate the cylinder horizontality (radial runout ≤ 2mm) and coupling coaxiality (deviation ≤ 4mm) to reduce material accumulation caused by vibration.

IV. Intelligent Monitoring

Install a current sensor and a mill noise detection device (electric ear) to monitor load status in real time and automatically adjust the feed rate if abnormalities occur.

Use a vibration analyzer to monitor the cylinder vibration spectrum (amplitude ≤ 0.5mm/s) to provide early warning of blockage risks.
